Wheel Magic for Pot Hole Damage

January 25th, 2016

...30" of snow? A massive thaw will equate to pot holes everywhere. All locations of 106 St Tire & Wheel in Corona, Forest Hills, Elmhurst and Jamaica, Queens, offer a wide variety of rim services for steel and alloy wheels.

Pot holes occur as a natural part of melting snow and ice and have nothing to do with city or state apathy; they are equal opportunity and they happen everywhere there are season thaws, freezes, snow falls and ice.  The resulting melted water seeps beneath the pavement through cracks caused by the wear and tear of traffic and the black top collapses. Because of our traffic situation here in the Big Apple and the weather we see now, we can expect plenty of pot holes that will cause damage to tires, wheels, axles, front end, etc. 106 St Tire is here to help you out if this darkens your ...[more]

All Season vs Winter Tires

January 15th, 2016

Winter's cold weather causes the rubber tread on all season or summer tire to stiffen and does not provide sufficient traction for wintry conditions. Tire design in tread rubber of winter tires are designed to remain flexible allowing the tire to grip the road better. And its not just tread design, its also the composition of the tire.

It's not uncommon for drivers to think a tire is a tire. However, that is not true.

Tires vary in composition, in tread depth and design and more, all suited for a specific driving purpose and need. Many cars leave the factory with all season tires. Those tires provide a fairly quiet ride, have good tread life and get good fuel economy. They are popular as all season tires offer flexible performance on a bevy of road services having been specifically designed to per ...[more]

Alloy Wheels Too Hot To Handle

January 14th, 2016

Lighter, hotter rims with better performance....Alloy wheels are made of aluminum or magnesium metals and, of course, they are lighter in weight and provide a hot, super stylish look.

Because the above metals are lighter than steel, they reduce your vehicle's weight, improves speed and performance when old fashioned steel wheels adds hundreds of pounds to your vehicle's weight making your engine tow more weight and slowing down speed and reducing gas mileage. Alloy wheels are also better heat conductors and reduce the chances of brake failures under most driving conditions. We've been consistent in telling drivers that NYC's road conditions makes our area an area with "severe" conditions so please bear that in mind knowing that on Queens streets your alloy wheels are vulnerable.

The lighter weight of the alloy rim is more suitable for ...[more]

Is Your Car Groaning, Chugging, Clunking?

January 12th, 2016

Noises from your ride; not a good thing!

If those noises are not the gentle purr of efficiency and the quiet zoom of a well performing engine they are usually warning signs.

When you hear them, that’s the time to drive over to 106 St Tire and Wheel (depending on the sound, see below, a tow truck may be needed) and let a pro hear what you hear. Our advice: It’s too risky to wait, of course, depending on the noise and the cause which you probably won't know until someone with diagnostic skill here's the sound.

While some auto repair shops might make a differentiation between sounds you could ignore and ones you need to investigate, our shops recommend that all noises and odors be checked out by our skilled technicians.

First, all of our locations offer a FREE 47 point safety check. That's the place to start by l ...[more]
