Wheel Balancing 101

March 7th, 2016

Living in NYC is a balancing act for us and your tires & wheels!

Well, here's one more thing to balance...your drive. A smooth, flawless ride is important for your vehicle especially your tires, front end and brakes.

Today, we're talking about getting our wheels and tires to rotate at varying speeds without vibrations. Here's a secret...even brand new tires are not perfectly round. More secrets, sssh....the weight of your tires are not perfectly distributed. In some spots they are lighter and in others they are heavier. And any of the above can lead to vibrations and less than a smooth ride.

March 1st, 2016

Your Battery & What You May not Know:

Ever have dirty battery cables be the cause of your ride not starting?  Here's one of our annoyingly over used words: MAINTENANCE.

The cables on your battery are subject to corrosion and, eventually, that will prevent your car from starting despite your battery being just fine.  The ultimate result? A small amount of maintenance can prevent the above.

Clean Engines on Used Cars- CAUTION

February 25th, 2016

Is an grimey, yucky, greasy messy engine a red flag? NO! Is a clean one a good sign? NO!

Ever open a hood and see a sparkling clean engine? Are you envious? Does it always mean the car you're looking at is in good condition? Hell, no. Even if it looks like Aunt Tillie has just waxed and polished it, is it an absolute good deal? Nope.

Sure, it looks great and your thinking, "man, this baby is clean and kewl looking." Not so fast. Car dealers and buyers might be using a little psychology on you.

Grease Your Door Hinges

February 23rd, 2016

If your car doors or trunk sound like the creaking of a door at a haunted house, you need probably need grease or lubrication on the hinges. Ignore this and don't be surprised if your doors and trunk eventually land up damaged from binding, bending and twisting making closing or opening of doors difficult. The same goes for hoods, trunk lids, lift-gates and tail-gates. The longer you wait for lubrication the worse the damage can be and the more expense you will incur. Again, its one of 106 St Tire's important words we nag you about: MAINTENANCE.

February 8th, 2016

Advice from the 106 St pros...

We bet you thought the word is caliber, right? As in .45mm? Hey, we're from the 'hood, too, so we understand.

However, the word is caliper and each brake has one but does your ride have 2 or 4. That depends on type of braking system you have. Check your owners manual if you don't know. Don't have it, download it by Googling year, make and model for your car bible.

Brake calipers are one of several important parts composing your braking system, and, for God's sake, this is NYC. Queens epitomizes the "severe" driving conditions ...[more]

Front End Tips from Our Experts: Ball joints

February 4th, 2016

...do you grease & inspect your balls

joints? How? Look regularly at the rubber boots containing grease around them. If they are impaired in anyway, like shredded or ripped, or just gone, you will need to grease them with the proper grease (owner's manual time again!) or replace the boot which seals them in grease and seals out dirt or probably replace the ball joints.

Some cars have ball joints need to be greased while others don't because they are sealed with a life time supply of grease in the above closed environment.

Hearing clunks, got sloppy steering? That may be the result of your ball joints needing replacement. When they are worn there will be a rattle or clunking so ...[more]

Serpentine Belt Wear - How to Inspect It

February 3rd, 2016

Under your hood there's a long belt that kinda snakes around your engine. This is a critical part of your engine drive as it powers your very important alternator that keeps your battery fully charged. The serpentine belt also powers your air-conditioning compressor as well as your power steering pump. Its duties varies from manufacturer-to-manufacturer and on some vehicles it can possibly run the power brakes, your radiator fan and the water pump. Important stuff, right?

You can see from the above that this part is critical in keeping your auto on the road because if your serpentine belt breaks and all the belts in your vehicle can wear out depending on temperature under the hood, mileage on your car or just ordinary wear.
