Brakes

But what, then, are brakes even made of? Well, there are three main types of material, each with its own benefits. Let's look into what they do.

· Ceramic– this is not exactly the same material you'll find on your dinner table. It does, however, have a lot of the same benefits. The reason why ceramic is used for food is that it insulates high temperatures, and the more advanced heavy-duty ceramic used in brakes also handles the heat and friction required to make your vehicle stop. The rest of the braking mechanism can get really hot, and the ceramic used in brakes can withstand that heat, as well as cold weather.

· Semimetallic– sometimes brake manufacturers use metallic alloys and mixes in their brakes to create a material that acts as a robust structure able to stop the vehicle, create friction, and tolerate temperature differences.

· Kevlar– you may have heard about Kevlar on the news because it's the material used to make bulletproof vests. The reason for that application is that Kevlar is a lightweight fiber that is stronger than steel, and when used in brakes, it allows for a significantly strong and heat-resistant setup that does not weigh down the rest of the machinery.
